SUPPORT STILL AT HAND OVER THE FESTIVE SEASON

19 December 2011

The Minister for Mental Health, Kevin Humphries, today offered a reminder that support is available for people experiencing stress or isolation over the festive period.

“Christmas is a time when most people are surrounded by close friends and family,” Minister Humphries said. “Whilst it’s certainly the way that many of us look forward to spending the break, for some people in our communities the festive season can be tough.”

“It’s important to remember that you’re not alone, and that support services like Lifeline are out there to help,” Minister Humphries said.

The festive season often brings raised expectations and additional stressors including increased financial burden, family tensions, and heightened feelings of isolation.

Supported by the NSW Government, Lifeline in NSW takes more than 170,000 calls a year from people seeking crisis and mental health support. At this time of year, their services are more important than ever.

“Christmas is a difficult time for many of us,” Lifeline’s Director of Communications, Chris Wagner said. “We want to remind people that you can call 13 11 14 at any time. We’re here to listen and to help.”

One in five people will be affected by mental illness at some stage in their life and many more experience a highly stressful or crisis situation.

Minister Humphries encouraged people to use the break to relax and take steps to reduce stress, including getting active, eating sensibly and watching the amount of alcohol you consume.

“This year has been a great one for raising awareness about mental health in communities across NSW, including through events like Mental Health Month and R U OK? Day, and in doing so reducing the stigma associated with it,” Minister Humphries said. “At Christmas time it’s important to remember the value of reaching out and making contact with people in your life, and in offering support where it’s needed.”
