COMMUNITY VISITORS SCHEME
Friends for Older People

What is the Community Visitors Scheme?
- The Community Visitors Scheme (CVS) is a program funded by the Australian Government and was established to promote links between people living in an aged care home and the wider community.
- The CVS aims to enrich the quality of life of residents of aged care homes who may be socially isolated or lonely - whether for social or cultural reasons or due to disability. By befriending an older person living in an aged care home, you have a chance to make a difference to their life - and to your own.
- Improves the quality of life of residents in aged care homes
- Assists residents in maintaining their independence
- Enhances residents' social contacts
- Minimises residents' isolation from the general community.
What is a Community Visitor?
A community visitor is a person who sets aside time, at least once a fortnight, to visit and befriend a resident of an aged care home. Visits should be spent doing something you both enjoy - you might want to read, listen to music, chat and reminisce or go for a walk. The activities you undertake will depend on the health of the resident.

Chats Program
Location: Hobart Area
Lifeline Chats is a HACC (Home and Community Care) funded program for older people who are living in their homes and who are missing out on community activities and personal friendships.
Initially participants will receive a regular call, at a pre-arranged time, from a volunteer from Lifeline. The main purpose is to listen and build a supportive relationship through friendly conversation.
Volunteer callers are able to provide information about events and activities, contact information for relevant services and organisations and other information as required, without pressure for participants to join groups or activities. Our focus is on getting to know participants and to support them in the direction they choose for their life.
The Chats program offers a range of social and cultural activities which reflect the interests of our participants. These include group activities around crafts, games, movies, singing and dining. Small group activities and outings are arranged around specific events, or on an ongoing basis, to support participants in maintaining involvement in the community and to assist in building friendships founded on common interests.
Participants in the Program are supported by appropriately trained volunteers.

CHATS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - the older the better!!
You are needed urgently by the Lifeline Chats Program
If you are 18 or over,
If you have an hour or two a week to volunteer,
If you enjoy the company of older people,
If you love meeting new friends.
WE MAY HAVE A PLACE FOR YOU !!!!
Chats Volunteers can be involved in a range of exciting roles supporting older people.
We need people who enjoy talking with older people and would like to join our team of callers. The main purpose of the call is to listen and build a supportive relationship through friendly conversation.
Volunteer callers provide information about events and activities, contact information for relevant services and organisations and other information as required. There is no pressure for participants to join groups or activities. Our focus is on getting to know participants and to support them in the direction they choose for their life.
This aspect of the program does not include “face to face” contact, but you may wish to also work as a Social Activities volunteer.
Shifts are normally for 2 hours duration and occur at pre-arranged and regular times each week. Calls can be made from the Lifeline Office or, provided you have internet access, may be made from home after an appropriate period of training and support.
Social Activities volunteers attend outings and activities (at no cost) to support participants in their social interaction and engagement. This support may be in participating and assisting in craft activities, playing board games, discussion of current events or movies, assisting with mobility, a friendly ear and quiet chat, introductions to other people with similar interests or in many other ways.
You will receive training and support and have the opportunity to make a significant difference in other people’s lives.
