After almost 40 years of service, Lifeline, Australia’s oldest and largest 24-hour telephone counselling service, has introduced a new mental health information line.
His Excellency, the Right Reverend Dr Peter Hollingworth AC OBE, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, will launch the new service on Thursday, September 13 in Canberra. The new service is called Lifeline’s JUST ASK, Your Rural Mental Health Information Service. The Commonwealth Department of Health has funded the project. It will be launched as delegates from Lifeline Centres around Australia gather in Canberra this week for Lifeline’s National Convention 2001.JUST ASK Launch

What is JUST ASK?
Lifeline’s JUST ASK, Your Rural Mental Health Information Service, responds to the urgent need in rural Australia for accurate information about mental health issues. While not a counselling service, JUST ASK offers information and referrals to people with a mental illness, their friends, families and carers. JUST ASK is based in Nowra, on the NSW South Coast and is administered by Lifeline South Coast. It is a key national program and a major initiative in mental health awareness.

There are more than 200 Lifeline shops and outlets across Australia. Most of these outlets rely on volunteers to assist with storing goods, driving trucks, serving stores or repairing broken items for sale.
