Grahame Gould, Lifeline South Coast’s Executive Director, is encouraging Illawarra and South Coast residents to make a New Year’s resolution to help others in their community and train to become a volunteer telephone counsellor.
“Our volunteer telephone counsellors come from all walks of life,” Grahame said.
“Some are in full-time employment and some are retired. Some are just starting university and others have lived a wealth of experience. There is no particular mould for a Lifeline South Coast volunteer telephone counsellor and we are happy to take enquiries from anyone,” he said.
Trainee telephone counsellors receive extensive training in a vast range of areas and don’t go onto the phones until they have the skills and support they need. In addition, telephone counsellors can gain a nationally accredited qualification.
So if you are looking for a new challenge in 2010 and have some spare time on your hands, you could make a great Lifeline South Coast volunteer telephone counsellor.
Calls to the 24 hour telephone counselling service can be about any issue, no matter how big or small: relationships, loneliness, life decisions, grief, addiction, abuse, stress and depression.
Please call 02 4228 1311 between 9am and 3pm for an information pack. Alternatively, the information pack and application form can be downloaded from the volunteer with us page of the website www.lifelinesouthcoast.org.au
