Anthony Callea backs Lifeline in 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here'
Lifeline will be cheering on Anthony Callea in Channel Ten’s reality series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, with the star singer-songwriter in the running to win $100,000 prize money for the national charity.
Lifeline Australia CEO Pete Shmigel said that about 4000 extra lifesaving calls to its 13 11 14 crisis line would be answered if Anthony Callea takes out the series, which sees celebrities enter the South African jungle to compete in a range of physical challenges over the next six weeks.
“It’s wonderful for Lifeline to be involved with I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here alongside a number of other very worthy charities – the show is helping to put a range of key issues in spotlight thanks to the involvement of some of the country’s biggest stars,” Mr Shmigel said.
“While I’m sure it will be fantastic viewing, we also hope Anthony Callea’s support contributes to the national conversation about suicide and encourages those doing it tough to seek help. With more than 2500 Australian’s dying by their own hand each year – more than double the road toll – this is a national emergency that we need to do something about.”
With more than a million calls to 13 11 14 expected in FY16, and 15 per cent of these to go unanswered due a lack of resources, Mr Shmigel highlighted that a whole-of-community approach is needed to stop suicide.
“It’s heart-wrenching that there are so many in our community in crisis and needing support, but, by talking about the issue, checking in with our friends and loved ones, and letting people know about the support offered by organisations such as Lifeline, we can all make a difference,” Mr Shmigel said.
Anthony Callea was the runner-up in 2004 series of Australian Idol and his debut single The Prayer is the fastest-selling single by an Australian artist.
