Julian Leeser MP makes powerful inaugural speech to help prevent suicide
Lifeline Australia commends the brave Inaugural Speech delivered by Mr Julian Leeser, Member for Berowra, dedicated to his late father.
Lifeline Australia CEO Pete Shmigel said “Julian’s comments were profound. When a person, a newly public person as well, talks about their experiences with suicide it helps to heal those that are currently struggling. The research shows that hearing others speak out on the topic of suicide empowers other people to actively seek help.
“Julian has done a great service to his community by destigmatising suicide and his story is especially poignant as there are some 8 suicides per day in Australia – with middle aged men being the most susceptible age and gender group. He has acknowledged that suicide is as much a social issue as it is a medical issue and that connections are as important as prescriptions.
“Julian knows we are in the grip of a national suicide emergency – he has seen 100 suicides in his own electorate since 2008. He acknowledges governments can’t keep doing what they have been doing – we need to innovate. I believe he, and his family, will be tremendous advocates in this parliament for destigmatisation and increased support for suicide prevention in Australia.”
