vetAWARE is a veteran mental health training package for Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) contracted community nurses.
Mental health is an important issue for the veteran and ex-service community as mental health issues may arise from military experience.
The training focuses on the mental health issues of veterans, war widow(er)s and former and current Defence Force members.
The training will:
- enable community nurses to identify mental health conditions and respond appropriately to clients presenting with mental health issues, including appropriate referral processes; and
- enhance nurses' confidence and provide them with self care strategies when working with clients with potential mental health issues.
The training package has been endorsed by the Royal College of Nursing Australia. Community nurses who complete the training will achieve Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) points and Continuing Development Points (CDP) towards their professional development.
An online version of the vetAWARE training program is expected to be available through the Department of Veterans Affairs shortly. For further information on the online program please contact Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
