Students help to bring suicide “Out of the Shadows”
Suicide can be a difficult topic for some to open up about, but current Community Services students from North Coast TAFE have aligned with one local organisation to encourage people to speak up and raise awareness about the issue.
Students studying a Certificate IV in Community Services have paired with Lifeline North Coast in order to promote the “Out of the Shadows” community walk. Lifeline North Coast CEO Allister Donald says “We commend and thank the TAFE students who have done a marvellous job in pairing with us in preparing for and promoting this event. The walk is a great opportunity for community members to offer support and hope to one another, while also being part of a necessary conversation to help reduce the stigma around suicide.” Lifeline is calling on the community to become involved with the event in Coffs Harbour on Sunday 11th September. “The suicide rate in Australia is now a national emergency with 8 Australians lost to suicide every day – that is 1 person lost every 3 hours and we know there are 7 attempted suicides every hour. Events like this are important in raising awareness for Lifeline’s 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services. Together, we can help ensure those in crisis are not alone” Allister says.
The group of students have been working tirelessly over the past six weeks in order to raise awareness about the event that is close to many of them. “Instead of performing another role play in class, we felt the need to help out with a real issue that affects our community on a day to day basis” student Liesl Nugent said. “It touches so many people in our area, the issue is widespread. We’re not just looking at the event now, we’re trying to put steps in place to hope this event grows into the future with the hope of suicide prevention”.
