About Lifeline South East SA

Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. has been in operation since 1st July 1983. Based in Mount Gambier, on the Limestone Coast of South Australia, we are one of 42 Centres in 60 locations across Australia. We are a community based Lifeline Centre, providing a broad range of support, information, counselling and referral services.

Our core service is the 24 hour telephone crisis support service. This service is part of a National Call Flow. We work closely with other Lifeline Centres as a contributing member of this national 24 hour service.

Although as a Lifeline Centre, we are well known for the 24 hour telephone crisis support service, here, in South East South Australia, we also provide additional services and programs which focus on the needs of our local community.

Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. is supported by community groups, philanthropy, churches, service clubs, the Local, State and Federal Government Services, the Community and, of course, our Volunteers.

The telephone crisis support service is partly funded by the business arm of Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. We have a bookshop in Mount Gambier, and recycled clothing shops in Mount Gambier, Millicent, Naracoorte, Murray Bridge and Victor Harbour. See Business.

Partnerships & Alliances

In 2007 the Community Engagement Board welcomed Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. as an Alliance Partner with the South Australian Strategic Plan.

Lifeline Services

Lifeline 24 hour crisis and referral line 13 11 14

Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. contributes to a 24 hour Telephone Crisis Support, Information and Referral service that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

ASIST Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training

Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. provides ASIST workshops where all kinds of caregivers – professional workers, volunteers, employees, friends and family – can learn suicide first aid.

Assist workshops move beyond suicide awareness to provide participants with the skills to work with persons at risk, increase their immediate safety and link to further help.

ASIST training applies in everyday situations with family, friends, co workers, team mates as well as in professional roles or volunteering.

ASIST trainers complete a 5 day Living Works train the trainer course. Living Works, founded in Canada in 1983, is now available across the world.

There are other Living Works programs that are companions to ASIST and seek to increase awareness and explore ways the whole of community might respond.

Care Ring

Care Ring is a free friendship service providing daily personal telephone contact to persons living alone. Care Ring provides a security and safety check through a cheerful “Hello” from someone who cares. Care Ring is supported by Mount Gambier City Council and Grant District Council.

Calls are made six days a week between 8am – 11am. If the phone is not answered within a reasonable period an emergency contact person will be phoned to check on the well being of the Care Ring client.

The service is an excellent support for:

  • Those who are isolated or elderly
  • Those who have temporary or long term health problems
  • Those who may have restricted contact with the community

Suicide Bereavement Support Group

The Suicide Bereavement Support Group is supported by Mount Gambier City Council and Grant District Council. The Group is open to adults who have experienced the loss of a loved one through Suicide.

The Group is run by trained and accredited group facilitators supported by the Best Practice Standard and Guidelines developed specifically for use by Suicide Bereavement Groups through the Commonwealth Best Practice Project (Dept. of Health and Ageing) 2009.

The meetings provide a safe and confidential opportunity for people to talk about their grief, to gain an understanding and to learn from others.

Limestone Coast Regional Gambling Help Service

The Limestone Coast Regional Gambling Help Service encompasses the service area of Keith, Naracoorte, Penola, Bordertown (Tatiara) Wattle Range, Grant and Mount Gambier.

Services offered include:

  • Financial Counselling
  • Therapeutic Counselling
  • Information on barring options, current resources, self help materials and family protection orders
  • Referrals including those to the State-wide Gambling Therapy Service, 24 hour Gambling Help Line, CALD services

All Gambling Help services are free. No fees or charges apply.

Funding is provided through contributions from the South Australian Government, Australian Hotels Association, Club SA and Sky City Casino – through the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund.

Limestone Coast Regional Gambling Help Service has been operating in the South East of South Australia for more than a decade and has helped and supported many individuals and families affected by problem gambling.

Financial Counselling Services

At Lifeline South East Financial Counselling is provided through:

  • Low Income Support Program

Funded by SA Government Department For Families And Communities

  • Commonwealth Financial Counselling

Funded by Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs

  • Emergency Relief Funding

The aim of financial counselling is to not only work with clients to resolve their current financial difficulties but to increase the client’s money management knowledge and skills so they have an improved ability to manage their financial affairs in the future.

Financial Counselling Services are delivered by counsellors qualified or working toward qualification in the Diploma of Financial Counselling.

Prison Work

Since 1995 Lifeline South East has been involved in training and support services to Mount Gambier Prison. The work builds on the recommendations for the prevention of prison suicide and self harm as comprehensively outlined in the 1990 review of prisons in the UK.

Programs that have been established include:

  • A prisoner peer support program called “The Listeners”
  • Orientation Training in Suicide Awareness and Intervention for all new prison staff
  • Orientation Training in Communication Skills for all new prison staff
  • Ongoing regular staff professional development in Suicide Prevention
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) for staff and prisoners
  • Access to other Lifeline services for prisoners such as gambling counselling

Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. appreciates community donations of clean, resaleable goods. Funds raised support the 24 hour telephone crisis support service. However, Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. is also committed to responsible waste management.

Please remember when donating goods:

  • Disposal of waste is costly and reduces the funding toward the 24 hour telephone counselling service.
  • Any unsuitable donations have to be disposed of by us and this impacts on our volunteers.
  • All items need to be placed fully in the bins.
  • Goods left out create a mess, become damaged and are therefore unsaleable.

Telephone Crisis Supporters

Every day across Australia, Lifeline is recruiting and training Volunteer Telephone Crisis Supporters. Lifeline South East (SA) Inc. run two courses per year at the Centre in Mount Gambier. A new National Training Course has commenced across Australia in 2010.

The course (face to face and e-learning modules) covers:

  • Introduction to Telephone Counselling
  • Self Awareness
  • Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
  • Lifeline Practice Model
  • Grief and Loss
  • Relationship Issues
  • DiVeRt
  • Child Protection Issues
  • Addiction Theory
  • Mental Health Theory
  • Answering the Call
  • Applying ASIST
  • Organisation Protocols
  • Community Issues

There are information and registration sessions at the beginning of each course.

A contribution of $220 toward the cost of the training program is required and an ongoing commitment to fulfil the shifts needed to maintain a 24 hour service.
