Peer Support training courses

Peer Support is about our shared experiences as human beings. It is about understanding another person's situation and providing empathy and support, especially during times of stress.

Why Peer Support training is important

Research tells us that employees are more likely to see support from a work colleague than from formal support pathways. So it is important employees have the basic skills and awareness to help assist them.

Accidental Counsellor

Accidental Counsellor is underpinned by peer support principles and is aimed at those who would like to be able to safely and effectively support colleagues, family and friends and strangers who are in distress or experiencing a crisis.

While this course does not train participants to be counsellors, the skills learnt in the course can be applied in many contexts. It will provide participants with communications skills in active listening and reflection, effective questioning, and de-escalation techniques.

Access the course brochure here.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply the principles of recognise, respond and refer to someone who is experiencing an emotional crisis
  • Demonstrate key communication skills
  • Define the importance of self-care

Accidental Counsellor by Lifeline uses a blended learning model for flexibility and to ensure the learning outcomes are best met.

  • 1-hour online, self-directed Group session
  • 3.5-hour delivered in person or virtually by Lifeline trainers

Managing Challenging Interactions

Anyone who is exposed to challenging situations and interactions in their workplace or community would benefit from this course. These roles include, but are not limited to; retail, call centres, collections, customer services, complaints and escalation handling, case management, or anyone exposed to challenging interactions in the workplace.

Dealing with people who are distressed, angry or otherwise challenged by a situation can be difficult for all of us. Never more so than in a work environment where we have a job to do, clients to service, colleagues to consider and boundaries to work within.

This workshop aims to provide participants with the contextual knowledge of why a person might present with distress, become abusive or aggressive. We provide training in practical skills and communication to equip people with tools to safely intervene or escalate the situation, set boundaries, debrief, build resilience and develop their own self care plan.

The course is delivered in a 4-hour interactive facilitator-led session and can be delivered virtually or face to face.
