Phone crisis supporters

Lifeline offer 24/7 Phone Service to the Australian community, and this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of people like you. Phone volunteering may be right for you if there is a Lifeline Centre in a location convenient to you, if you enjoy the one-on-one interaction you get from a phone call and if you learn best with others.

What does a crisis supporter do?

Train

Once accepted, you’ll begin your journey with Lifeline through nationally recognised training designed to prepare you for the role of crisis supporter. The Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT) course is comprehensive and extensive, combining formal training with workplace coaching and an internship. You’ll learn and develop your skills in a welcoming and highly supportive environment, guided by experienced trainers.

Respond

You will respond by phone to create a moment of connection that can make a lasting difference in someone’s time of need.

Listen

Each interaction is focused on being fully present in the moment, providing immediate empathy and deep listening in someone’s time of need.

Empower

You will support the person to identify their next steps and encourage them to generate and own the action. If needed, you will create a safety plan with them.

How training works

As a crisis supporter you’ll become part of a community of people committed to making a difference. Many volunteers find the training not only valuable for their future roles, but describe it as personally transformative, enhancing their self-awareness.

Stage 1

Training

75hrs / 3 months
The first step is to get you trained up! Enjoy a mix of self-paced online learning and face-to-face sessions, as well as some observation shifts and assessments.
Stage 2

Placement

20-25hrs / 2 months
To get confident with providing crisis support, you’ll do on-the-job supported shifts which enable your supervisor to provide you with feedback and coaching.
Stage 3

Internship

80hrs / 9 months
During your internship you’ll start volunteer shifts and are provided with additional training, feedback and coaching. This is then followed by a final interaction assessment and interview.
Stage 4

Accredited Crisis Supporter

4hrs / fortnight
As a Lifeline crisis supporter, you’ll be providing crisis support, receiving feedback, and taking part in professional development activities.
Note: Individual Centres training timelines can vary with some offering additional ‘Fast Track’ training pathways. Please contact your local centre for further information.
